The Housing Authority of the City of Perth Amboy (HAPA) administers 360 conventional public housing units; two (2) senior citizens and/or disabled high rise buildings, and five (4) multifamily complexes. The Housing Authority provides safe and decent housing to low income families, senior citizens, and disabled individuals with federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Families admitted to public housing must pay 30% of their total family adjusted gross income. Families also have the option of income based rent or flat rent (based on the market rent for comparable units).
Applicants admitted to public housing must be eligible according to the income limits established by HUD. Applicants must supply income of all family members, provide U.S. citizenship and /or immigration status and provide social security numbers. The HAPA also does a credit, criminal and housing screening check through third party verification with other agencies and also computer matching. Upon completion of the screening process the eligible family or individual would be offered a unit according to family composition and family needs; handicapped accessible unit (accessible and designed with ramps, grab bar, lower counters).
Many programs are also available to public housing residents such as: HO, FSS, Computer Lab, after school (Catholic Charities), and Supportive Services (NJ Institute of Disabilities).
Tenants must also comply with Community Service requirements – adult family members are required to do 8 hrs community services within the community or participate in an economic self-sufficiency program. Exempt family members are: age 62 years of age or older, blind or disabled, primary caretaker of a disabled person, gainfully employed or receiving Social Security or assistance from Welfare to Work program and is not in non-compliance with such program.
